Historical Prior to the transfer of nursing education to the university sector, nurses were trained in a course of instruction in hospital nursing schools that awarded a certificate in general nursing. These courses were generally for a three year period, and nurses were paid employees of the parent hospital. Hospitals awarded distinctive badges upon graduation . In addition, state registering authorities awarded a badge of registration . These were generally worn on the uniform collars. It is interesting to note that as early as the 1930s, attempts were made to establish university credentialed nursing courses in Australia, most notably by then director of nursing at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne. As recently as the 1970s, Dr. Sandra Stacy, one of the first Australian nurses to attain a PhD enrolled in a school of anthropology to submit her thesis. Northern Territory leads the world in Remote Nurse Practitioner Program

In a world first – the Centre for Remote Health’s (CRH) Master of Remote Health Practice: Nurse Practitioner Program is set to deliver speciality nurse practitioners to work in Remote and Aboriginal Health in Australia. Developed collaboratively by Flinders University and CRANA plus, the nurse practitioner program has received full accreditation from the NT Nursing and Midwifery Board for five years. ‘The further you go from cities and regional areas, the fewer the health professionals and the higher the health need,’ Associate Professor Sabina Knight said today. ‘People in remote and outback areas of Australia depend heavily on nurses for their health care and nurse practitioners will play a vital leadership role into the future,’ she said. ‘Legislation is currently before Parliament to enable Medicare to reimburse nurse practitioner services – a vital reform in improving equity for people accessing or relying on nurse practitioner services. The Council of Remote Area Nurses of Australia Does Not Support Single Nurse Posts

The Council of Remote Area Nurses of Australia once again raises the issue of the safety of nurses working in single posts in the most remote locations in Australia. This follows the report of an assault on one such nurse working alone in a single nurse post in the remote Torres Strait. In its positional statement of May 2002, The Council of Remote Area Nurses Inc. stated its opposition to Remote Area Nurses working in single nurse posts. The findings of a two year study entitled "Unfinished Business” by Associate Professor Trudy Yuginovich and Remote Area Nurse Lyn Hinspeter into the stressors of Remote Area Nursing supports this position and shows strong links between nurse’s concern for their personal safety and working in single nurse posts. Those interviewed discussed levels of violence within communities and how this creates fears for their personal safety. They also expressed concern at the difficulties in maintaining the appropriate level of primary health car...

Research Involvement & Training Opportunities

Each year under the PHCRED program, the University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) offers a small number of project-based research training opportunities attached to research projects operating within the Department. We are now seeking expressions of interest from primary health care professionals for these short term, part-time casual placements. These placements provide an opportunity for primary health care professionals with an interest in research to build their research skills, experience and track record through hands-on involvement in an existing research project under the guidance of an experienced researcher. While the mix of duties are broadly those of a research assistant, there will be a strong emphasis on mentoring, training and capacity building - in essence, a short-term research apprenticeship. Many previous participants in this program have moved on to study for higher degrees or have found positions involving a research component. The total hours ava...

Upswing in Swine Influenza Cases

NT Dept of Health & Families Media Release : Second H1N1 Death Highlights Need to Vaccinate 22 September 2010 The deaths of two elderly men in Darwin from H1N1 influenza (swine flu) in the past 48 hours have highlighted the importance of people obtaining the seasonal flu vaccination as soon as possible. “The patients had serious underlying health problems, which placed them in a high risk category for severe disease from H1N1 influenza,” said the Acting Director of the Centre for Disease Control, Dr Peter Markey. “Over the past few months, in advance of the annual flu season, we have been advising people to get vaccinated. It is recognised that influenza is more likely to occur in places where vaccination rates are lower.” “Personal protection measures such as hand washing and covering up when you cough or sneeze are also important, but vaccination against the flu remains the best way to protect yourself and the people around you. “It is especially important for th...
