Historical Prior to the transfer of nursing education to the university sector, nurses were trained in a course of instruction in hospital nursing schools that awarded a certificate in general nursing. These courses were generally for a three year period, and nurses were paid employees of the parent hospital. Hospitals awarded distinctive badges upon graduation . In addition, state registering authorities awarded a badge of registration . These were generally worn on the uniform collars. It is interesting to note that as early as the 1930s, attempts were made to establish university credentialed nursing courses in Australia, most notably by then director of nursing at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne. A program to enable psychiatrists and general practitioners to engage mental health nurses The Mental Health Nurse Incentive Program (MHNIP) funds community based general practices, private psychiatric practices and other appropriate organisations to engage mental health nurses to assist in the provision of coordinated clinical care for people with severe mental health disorders. Mental health nurses work in collaboration with psychiatrists and general practitioners to provide services such as monitoring a patient’s mental state, medication management and improving links to other health professionals and clinical service providers. These services are provided in a range of settings, such as clinics or patient’s homes and are provided at little or no cost to the patient. In a world first – the Centre for Remote Health’s (CRH) Master of Remote Health Practice: Nurse Practitioner Program is set to deliver speciality nurse practitioners to work in Remote and Aboriginal Health in Australia. The Council of Remote Area Nurses of Australia once again raises the issue of the safety of nurses working in single posts in the most remote locations in Australia. This follows the report of an assault on one such nurse working alone in a single nurse post in the remote Torres Strait. In its positional statement of May 2002, The Council of Remote Area Nurses Inc. stated its opposition to Remote Area Nurses working in single nurse posts. The findings of a two year study entitled "Unfinished Business” by Associate Professor Trudy Yuginovich and Remote Area Nurse Lyn Hinspeter into the stressors of Remote Area Nursing supports this position and shows strong links between nurse’s concern for their personal safety and working in single nurse posts. What is Gastroenterology Nursing?

Gastroenterology nursing is a specialty practice area in which nurses provide care to patients with known or suspected gastrointestinal problems who are undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic treatment and/or procedures. This care is provided by Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses and may occur in a variety of settings. The National Perinatal Depression Initiative (NPDI) is a 5-year Commonwealth and State funded initiative which aims to improve the prevention and early detection of antenatal and postnatal depression; and to provide better care, support and treatment for expectant and new mothers who are at risk or experiencing perinatal depression. Each year under the PHCRED program, the University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) offers a small number of project-based research training opportunities attached to research projects operating within the Department. We are now seeking expressions of interest from primary health care professionals for these short term, part-time casual placements. These placements provide an opportunity for primary health care professionals with an interest in research to build their research skills, experience and track record through hands-on involvement in an existing research project under the guidance of an experienced researcher. While the mix of duties are broadly those of a research assistant, there will be a strong emphasis on mentoring, training and capacity building - in essence, a short-term research apprenticeship. Nursing Australia secures preferred supplier agreement with Ramsay Healthcare NSW

SKILLED's Nursing Australia division has won one of Australia's largest nursing preferred supplier agreements, and will become the exclusive supplier of agency nurses to Ramsay Healthcare's major private hospitals in the Sydney region and NSW Hunter Valley. Nursing Australia, part of SKILLED's Origin Healthcare business, was already a lead supplier to Ramsay Healthcare hospitals in WA and Queensland, and the NSW deal significantly extends the relationship. Ramsay previously used more than 40 nursing agencies in NSW, and under the new agreement, Nursing Australia will be the exclusive supplier. In cases where it can't supply, Ramsay will access the market directly or use secondary suppliers. Origin Healthcare CEO John Watkinson told Shortlist that Origin was "delighted" to win the three-year contract, which followed an extensive competitive tender process by Ramsay. Flight Nurses

Justine completed RGN training in London in 1993 and worked in UCH and Middlesex Hospitals in A&E. She obtained a BSc (Hons) Midwifery in 1996 and worked at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for 4 years setting up the UK's first Midwifery High Dependence Unit. Justine moved to Australia in 2000 with the sole aim of becoming a Flight Nurse. Initially she worked in Alice Springs Hospital and gained rural and remote experience during those first six months. She had some interaction with RFDS at that time and began working in the Queensland Section in 2001 as a Flight Nurse Retriever, spending time in both Rockhampton and Brisbane. In January 2006 Justine became Nurse Manager - Clinical at the Brisbane Base and manages her excellent team of Flight Nurses whilst maintaining her clinical skills by flying or working in the Queensland Clinical Coordination Centre.
